Iraq Turkmen Front (ITF) President Muhammed Seman Agha has been elected as the new governor of Kirkuk in a vote held at the Kirkuk Provincial Council. Agha has become the first Turkmen to be appointed as governor of the city in approximately 100 years.
For the first time in about a century, a Turkmen governor has been appointed in the city of Kirkuk, Iraq. Following a vote at the Kirkuk Provincial Council, Muhammed Seman Agha, the President of Iraq Turkmen Front (ITF), was elected as the new governor of the city. The meeting at the Kirkuk Provincial Council was attended by 14 members, while the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by Mesut Barzani, boycotted the meeting.
The session of the Kirkuk Provincial Council, which was planned to be held in the morning, could not take place due to the failure to reach a legal quorum. The session was postponed to 6:00 p.m. During this period, ITF President Agha reached the Kirkuk Governorate building with great interest and crowds. Following the voting held in the evening session, Agha was formally elected as the Governor of Kirkuk.

In his first press conference after being elected, Agha emphasized the historical significance of a Turkmen taking on this role. Agha stated, “The promise we made a year ago has come true today. We are witnessing a historic process that ends a 100-year-old longing in Kirkuk. Congratulations to all Turkmen people. Kirkuk now has a Turkmen governor,” he said.
Agha’s election as the Governor of Kirkuk after about 100 years has been welcomed with joy by Turkmen people. Thousands of Turkmen citizens took to the city’s main streets carrying ITF and Turkmeneli flags, celebrating this significant event.
